Healthcare Should Be Accessible to Everyone: The Values Behind Mo’s Home Pathology
Healthcare should not become inaccessible simply because a patient is elderly, has a disability, finds blood collection difficult, requires extra time and patience, or is experiencing financial hardship.
At Mo’s Home Pathology, this belief is central to the way we work.
We are a private home pathology collection service, but we do not believe healthcare should become a rigid transaction where a patient is simply told a price and turned away if their circumstances make that price difficult.
We believe in finding a way to help whenever we reasonably can.
Sometimes a Blood Collection Requires More Than Just Taking Blood
Recently, we were contacted by a care facility that needed an urgent blood collection for a patient with additional support needs.
The collection was not straightforward.
The patient required greater patience, flexibility and understanding than might normally be needed during a routine blood collection. The facility was also looking for someone who could attend promptly and work within the patient’s individual circumstances.
They contacted Mo’s Home Pathology.
We arranged the collection quickly, attended the facility and completed the blood collection at a significantly reduced fee that was affordable for the patient.
For us, this was more than simply another pathology collection.
It represented exactly why we believe accessible home healthcare matters.
We Believe Healthcare Is for Everyone
Every patient is different.
Some people are comfortable attending a busy pathology collection centre and having their blood taken within a few minutes.
Others may require considerably more support.
This may include:
- People living with intellectual or developmental disabilities
- Elderly patients
- People with dementia or cognitive impairment
- Patients with severe anxiety around needles or medical environments
- People with limited mobility
- Patients who are unwell or unable to travel
- People living in residential aged-care or supported-care facilities
- Patients experiencing financial hardship
- People who simply need additional time, reassurance and patience
A difficult collection should not automatically mean that someone loses access to the pathology testing their doctor has requested.
Our approach is to consider the person first, not simply how easy or difficult the collection may be.
Home Blood Collection Can Make Healthcare More Accessible
For some patients, travelling to a collection centre is a minor inconvenience.
For others, it can be the main reason their blood test does not happen.
A home collection removes many of those barriers.
Instead of organising transport, navigating an unfamiliar medical environment or waiting in a collection centre, the patient can remain somewhere familiar — whether that is their own home, an aged-care facility or another supported living environment.
This can be particularly valuable for patients who become distressed in unfamiliar surroundings or who need carers and healthcare workers around them during the collection.
Where clinically appropriate, we take the time required to make the experience as comfortable and respectful as possible.
We Don’t Want Price to Be the Only Reason Someone Misses a Blood Test
Mo’s Home Pathology is a private service and normally charges a private home collection fee.
However, we also recognise that people have very different financial circumstances.
The standard fee that is manageable for one person may be difficult for another.
That is why, where circumstances warrant it, we are happy to discuss the collection fee with the patient, family or care provider.
We already provide substantially reduced arrangements for some aged-care services, where collections may be required frequently and patients may have limited resources.
If someone genuinely needs our service but the standard private collection fee is creating a barrier, we encourage them to speak with us.
We cannot promise that every service can be provided at every requested price, particularly where significant travel, specialised collection requirements or extended attendance are involved. But we are always willing to listen to the circumstances and see whether a practical arrangement can be reached.
Our philosophy is simple:
A conversation about affordability is better than a patient simply going without a necessary blood test.
No Unnecessary Formalities
Accessing a home blood collection should not require a complicated registration process or endless back-and-forth communication.
In many cases, the entire arrangement can begin with one five-minute phone call.
You can tell us:
- Where the patient is located
- What collection is required
- Whether you have a pathology referral
- How urgently the collection is needed
- Whether the patient has any special requirements
- Any mobility, behavioural or communication considerations
- Whether there are financial circumstances we should be aware of
We then work out what is required and, where possible, arrange the collection.
There are, of course, essential clinical requirements that cannot be skipped — such as correctly identifying the patient, checking the pathology request and ensuring specimens are collected and transported appropriately.
But beyond what is medically and legally necessary, we aim to keep the process simple.
When a Collection Is Urgent, We Try to Respond Quickly
Sometimes a patient cannot wait several days for an available appointment.
A doctor may need blood results quickly. A care facility may need someone to attend the same day. A patient may have already been unable to access another collector.
Our mobile model allows us to respond flexibly.
Where availability and laboratory requirements allow, we can accommodate same-day and urgent home blood collections.
The recent collection at the care facility is an example of that approach.
The patient needed somebody willing to attend promptly, work with their additional needs and provide the collection at a cost that was manageable.
We were able to help.
Dignity Matters During Blood Collection
Blood collection may be routine for healthcare professionals, but it is not necessarily routine for the person having their blood taken.
Someone who is frightened, confused, distressed or unable to communicate in the usual way deserves the same dignity as every other patient.
That can mean slowing down.
It can mean speaking with carers first.
It can mean allowing the patient time to become comfortable with the collector.
It can mean adapting the approach to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to the collection.
Our aim is never simply to complete a procedure as quickly as possible.
It is to complete the collection safely, professionally and respectfully.
Supporting Aged-Care and Disability Care Providers
Home pathology collection can also reduce the burden on staff working in care environments.
Transporting a resident to a pathology centre may involve arranging:
- Transport
- Staff accompaniment
- Wheelchair or mobility assistance
- Appointment times
- Waiting periods
- Additional supervision
For some residents, leaving the facility itself can be distressing.
A mobile collector can instead attend the patient where they already live.
For aged-care facilities, disability support services and other residential care providers, we are happy to discuss ongoing collection arrangements and reduced pricing where appropriate.
Private Healthcare Can Still Have a Human Approach
Being a private service does not mean every decision has to be purely commercial.
Mo’s Home Pathology was created to provide a more flexible form of pathology collection — particularly for people who do not fit comfortably into the traditional collection-centre model.
Sometimes that flexibility means attending outside normal hours.
Sometimes it means staying longer with a difficult collection.
Sometimes it means attending a care facility at short notice.
And sometimes it means discussing the price because a patient is genuinely struggling financially.
We believe all of those things are part of providing a healthcare service centred around the patient.
